Day 1 in Berlin and I'm excited. The
day started out with some amazing cold coffee from the Monkey Bread place. Then
we (Seltzer, Callison, Abbey, and Kady) crossed the bridge where pedestrians cross under this beautiful brick
structure and to the side the street where the cars drive across, and above the
pedestrian bridge are tracks for the train. The bridge had a pungent smell to
it in some areas, but the view into the river was stunning. So much for it
being cold because we were melting as we explored and walked around. Across the
bridge, there was a plethora of restaurants but they were all closed, I’m
assuming it was because it was early Sunday morning. On this little stroll we
even encountered an old and really pretty looking church, right in the middle
of some buildings.
On our way back to the hotel we stopped by a restaurant called Pirates Berlin next to the East Side Gallery of the Berlin Wall and next to the river to eat. I ordered some small pancakes that had a dollop of fresh vanilla bean ice cream and some cubed fruit in the middle. The ice cream was unbelievable considering I’m not a fan of vanilla ice cream, but the best thing was that in the fruit there were pears and dragon fruit! Dragon fruit is rarely used in the states because it really has no flavor, but I was excited because I hadn’t had any since my horticulture lab in the fall.
After that we went back to the hotel to meet up with our guide Marianne. We left and went on this walking tour where she basically showed us where some of the major media places are located around Berlin. She explained a lot about the division of the East and the West and how some of the media was different. She took us to Checkpoint Charlie where there were some guys dressed up as soldiers taking pictures with people on the street. Finally we made our way over to Alexanderplatz to have our welcome dinner in the tallest structure of Berlin, the TV tower, otherwise known as the Fernsehturm de Berlin.
We went up into the tower and the restaurant spun so that you could see for miles out into Berlin. It was a really pretty view because the sun was still out and you could see things pretty clearly. For dinner we had some good bread rolls that had black olives and a Caesar salad that was really good. The dressing was different and the salad also had bacon bits, which is not common in a Caesar salad, but hey, its bacon! For the main course we had duck with a cherry sauce that was great and some potatoes. Finally for dessert some really pretty looking cake and coffee ice cream. We ended the night there and headed back to the hotel.
